An Open Letter to the American People

“Who Benefits from Your Silence?”

 

Dear American citizens,

Once, the United States was a guardian of the global order.  
After World War II, your country led the way in building a world of free trade and international cooperation.  
Institutions like the WTO, IMF, and World Bank were shaped by America, and helped many nations, including mine, grow and prosper.  
You were not just a powerful country - you were a trusted one.

But today, that trust is fading.  
And what’s worse, it is being broken in your name.

President Trump, under the slogan “Make America Great Again (MAGA),” launched a wave of tariffs across the world.  
Steel, semiconductors, cars, solar panels, washing machines - almost every industry was targeted.  
South Korea, the EU, Canada, Japan, Mexico, China - no country was spared.

And when these countries tried to respond, Trump warned:  
“If you strike back, we’ll hit harder.”

This is no longer trade policy.  
It is economic intimidation.  
It is a direct attack on the international rules America once asked the world to follow.

And yet -   
Why are you, the American people, so silent?

Do you believe this helps your country?  
Do you think tariffs are a patriotic way to protect jobs?  
Or are you simply too tired, too overwhelmed, too unsure to speak up?

But the truth is this:

Tariffs raise prices on imported goods, and you, the consumer, pay the cost.  
Businesses face uncertainty, which means less investment and fewer jobs.  
And most importantly -   
the world is beginning to lose trust in America.

Once, America stood for the rule of law.  
Now, it appears to stand for the rule of power.  
You used to persuade the world.  
Now, you threaten it.

And still -   
We don’t hear your voice.

Do you truly support this?  
Or have you simply stopped asking questions?

Silence is also a choice.  
And that silence is changing the world.

Let me tell you something that is often overlooked.

Today, it may seem like only countries like South Korea, Japan, or Europe are feeling the pain of these tariffs.  
Ordinary people are struggling - losing jobs, facing rising prices, and living harder lives.  
But that pain does not stay local.

It builds. It lingers.  
It turns into distrust, resentment, and eventually, resistance.

America is creating invisible enemies across the world.  
Trump’s tariff policy may bring short-term political wins,  
but in the long run, it creates far greater risks for your country.

Because a wounded neighbor may one day turn away.  
And when that day comes, true isolation begins.

So I ask you - gently, but firmly:

Please don’t remain silent.   
Say, “This is not who we are.”  
Say, “We can choose a better path.”

Your words, your voice,  
can change your nation’s future.  
And that future will shape the world.

I believe in your conscience.  
And I am waiting for your voice.
